This extension means that Sentinel-2A will work alongside Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-2C, creating a three-satellite constellation instead of the usual two. For Iceland, this brings more frequent observation opportunities, shorter revisit times and a better chance of capturing cloud-free images for environmental monitoring, land cover mapping, glaciers, coasts and natural hazards. The extended campaign also enables special activities that are not normally part of the Sentinel-2 programme, such as the recent night-time acquisition campaign dataset.

Framlenging Sentinel-2A leiðir til tíðari athugana yfir Íslandi Sentinel-2A-gervihnötturinn, elsti gervihnötturinn í Sentinel-2-stjörnumerkinu, mun halda áfram starfsemi til loka árs 2026. Þessi framlenging þýðir að Sentinel-2A mun starfa samhliða Sentinel-2B og Sentinel-2C og mynda þannig þriggja gervihnatta kerfi í stað hins hefðbundna tveggja gervihnatta kerfis.
