The Copernicus Ocean Hackathon 2025 in Iceland was a success. With around 60 participants, both on site and online the teams have tackled some hard challenges using Copernicus data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1.      Marine Pollution<\/strong>
Plastic waste, oil spills, and toxic chemicals are polluting marine ecosystems, threatening wildlife and human health. Every year, an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans. They form massive garbage patches. This impacts marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.      Overfishing and Unsustainable Practices<\/strong>
Overfishing has pushed many fish populations to the brink of collapse. This threatens food security and livelihoods in coastal communities. Sustainable fishing practices are crucial to balancing demand with ecological health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.      Climate Change and Rising Sea Levels<\/strong>
Oceans absorb about 90% of the heat from climate change. This absorption leads to rising sea levels. It also causes coral bleaching and disrupts marine ecosystems. Coastal cities and island nations are at increasing risk of flooding and erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.      Marine Biodiversity Loss<\/strong>
Habitat destruction, invasive species, and changing ocean temperatures are causing a decline in marine biodiversity. This loss threatens ecosystem services that humans depend on, from clean water to fisheries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
