Náttúrufræðistofnun hefur verið samþykkt sem sendiherra Copernicus og er þar með fyrsta stofnunin á Íslandi sem hlýtur þá viðurkenningu innan EU Space Networks.
Hlutverk sendiherra Copernicus er að efla notkun gagna, upplýsinga og þjónustu Copernicus á Íslandi og gera þau aðgengilegri fyrir rannsakendur, opinbera aðila, menntastofnanir, fyrirtæki og aðra notendur.
Copernicus-áætlunin er hluti af geimáætlun Evrópusambandsins og veitir opinn aðgang að gögnum og þjónustu sem byggja á mælingum frá gervitunglum og athugunum á landi, í lofti og á sjó. Gögnin eru meðal annars nýtt til vöktunar umhverfis og náttúru, loftslagsrannsókna, landupplýsinga, viðbragða við náttúruvá og sjálfbærrar nýtingar náttúruauðlinda.
Sem sendiherra Copernicus mun Náttúrufræðistofnun kynna þau gögn og þá þjónustu sem í boði eru, aðstoða notendur við að finna viðeigandi upplýsingar og styðja stofnanir og fyrirtæki sem vilja nýta fjarkönnunargögn í starfsemi sinni.
Náttúrufræðistofnun er nú þegar fulltrúi Íslands í Copernicus User Forum og Copernicus Committee, þar sem unnið er að þróun Copernicus-áætlunarinnar og fjallað um þarfir notenda.

Iceland First Copernicus Ambassador
The Natural Science Institute of Iceland, Náttúrufræðistofnun, has been accepted as a Copernicus Ambassador, becoming the first organisation in Iceland to receive this designation within the EU Space Networks.
The role will help promote the use of Copernicus data, information and services in Iceland and make these resources more accessible to researchers, public authorities, educational institutions, businesses and other users.
Copernicus is the Earth Observation component of the European Union’s Space Programme. It provides open data and services based on satellite observations and measurements from land, sea and air. These resources support environmental monitoring, climate research, land management, emergency response and the sustainable use of natural resources.
As a Copernicus Ambassador, Náttúrufræðistofnun will raise awareness of available data and services, help users find relevant information and support organisations interested in applying Earth Observation data in their work.
The institute already represents Iceland in the Copernicus User Forum and the Copernicus Committee, where it contributes to discussions on the development of the programme and the needs of users.
