Iceland Joins the Administrative Board of the European Union Agency for the Space Programme

Iceland has officially joined the Administrative Board of the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), marking an important step in strengthening cooperation between Iceland and Europe in space technology, satellite data and innovation.

Through this participation, Iceland will have the opportunity to contribute to strategic discussions on EUSPA’s activities and share its expertise in areas such as environmental monitoring, Earth observation and security. Iceland will participate on the Board without voting rights.

In March 2026, Iceland and the European Union also signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on secure satellite communications through the GOVSATCOM and IRIS² programmes.

New Opportunities for Iceland

Iceland’s participation creates new opportunities for collaboration with European partners, supporting innovation and technological development.

European space programmes such as Copernicus, which provides valuable Earth observation data, play an increasingly important role in ocean research, environmental monitoring and the sustainable management of natural resources.

For Iceland, where the ocean and maritime industries are central to the economy, improved access to satellite data and international cooperation offers significant opportunities to strengthen knowledge, safety and innovation across the blue economy.

By joining EUSPA’s Administrative Board, Iceland reinforces its position in European space cooperation and contributes to the continued development and practical application of space technologies.
