Copernicus-verkefnið Blue North fær fjármagn til að efla þekkingu á sjávargögnum tengdum Íslandi.
Verkefnið “Blue North: Building Copernicus Marine Literacy in Iceland” hefur fengið fjármagn frá Mercator Ocean International til ársloka 2026 á grundvelli samstarfsáætlunar Copernicus (NCP). Að verkefninu standa Háskóli Íslands, Íslenski sjávarklasinn og Náttúrufræðistofnun. Markmið þess er að efla innlenda þekkingu á sjávargögnum, auka gagnalæsi og byggja upp öflugt samfélag Copernicus-notenda á Íslandi.
Helstu verkþættir eru:
- Samráðsfundur hagsmunaaðila vorið 2026 til að tengja saman fulltrúa stjórnvalda, fræðasamfélags og atvinnulífs
- Þátttaka nemenda og kennara á alþjóðlegu málþingi
- Vinnustofa um sjávargögn
- Landskeppni nemenda og sprotafyrirtækja í sjávargagna-hakkaþoni haustið 2026
Auk þess verður unnið að þróun fræðsluefnis á íslensku, stuðningi við nýsköpun tengda hafinu og bættu aðgengi að sjávargögnum á íslensku vefsvæði Copernicus-áætlunarinnar (www.copernicus.is).
Verkefnið tekur mið að þörfum Íslands á sviði vöktunar strand- og hafsvæða, sjálfbærra fiskveiða og verndar búsvæða og styður þannig við stefnu Íslands og Evrópusambandsins í haf- og umhverfismálum.
“Blue North” Project Approved to Boost Copernicus Marine Capacity in Iceland
The Blue North: Building Copernicus Marine Literacy in Iceland project has been approved for funding by Mercator Ocean International under the Copernicus National Collaboration Programme (NCP). It will serve as Iceland’s Copernicus Marine NCP until the end of 2026.
The project is a collaboration between the University of Iceland, the Natural Science Institute of Iceland, and the Iceland Ocean Cluster. It aims to strengthen national capacity, promote ocean data literacy, and build a vibrant Copernicus Marine user community in Iceland.
Key activities include:
- A Stakeholder Forum in early 2026 to connect government, academia, and industry,
- An visit to an international user seminar for students and educators,
- A marine data workshop,
- A national Copernicus Ocean Hackathon in autumn 2026 for students and startups.
The project will develop Icelandic-language training materials, support marine innovation, and enhance the national Copernicus portal (www.copernicus.is) with marine-focused resources.
Blue North addresses Iceland’s needs in areas such as coastal monitoring, sustainable fisheries, and habitat protection, contributing to national and EU marine policy goals.
